World of SmackDown: SmackDown Recap and Results for 11/20/09

Philadelphia, PA - The Brothers of Destruction vs. Jerishow is highlighted as well as, you guessed it, a John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler match. But this time it’s a 2-out of-3 falls match for the title, which should add a new element to this now old rivalry.

Batista vs. Matt Hardy

We get started with Batista, who comes out with the classic, slow heel walk, staring down the crowd as they boo him. I’m actually surprised we are starting with a match instead of a promo, but it looks like WWE really wants to take us into Survivor Series with strong television showings. Matt Hardy comes out to yet again challenge Batista in a re-match of our main event from a few weeks ago where Batista was disqualified for being just too Animal like.

Batista dominates the match very similar to their last match, but Hardy shows signs of life and even attempts an early Twist of Fate, which, like all early Twists of Fates, is countered. Batista pulls off a spine buster and then lays Hardy out again with two more spine busters. After a Batista Bomb, the Animal gets the three count in what was a very similar match from when these two last met.

A promo of the contract signing between Mysterio and Batista is shown and then Batista gets interviewed by Josh in the back. The Animal says Mysterio made three major mistakes. One, he cost him the world heavyweight title. Two, he signed the hold harmless agreement and three, he embarrassed him at the signing. He is going to punish Rey at Survivor Series with no remorse.

Commercial

We come back with Teddy Long being interrupted by Vickie Guerrero with Eric Escobar. She says he needs to keep control of the show and that allowing the Brothers of Destruction to reunite will ruin the program and the main event at Survivor Series. Enter Vincent Kennedy McMahon. McMahon goes on to tell Teddy that reuniting the Brothers of Destruction was a mistake, although it was his idea. Vince also brings up the idea of having Vickie help Teddy as a consultant until he gets off probation. This of course makes Vickie very happy.

Drew McIntyre vs. Finlay

Drew McIntyre’s music hits as he makes his way to the ring to take on Finlay and we go to…

Commercial

A promo plays of McIntyre’s assault on Finlay from three weeks ago where he absolutely dismantled the Irishman.

McIntyre says Finlay is a scared old lady, and taunts him to come out to which he does. Finlay wastes no time dropping McIntyre to the mat, throwing fists all over the place. McIntyre’s hair is in full bloom. While getting assaulted in corner McIntyre pokes at Finlay’s face, hitting his eye and then dropping him with his double under hook DDT. A quick match and bit of a disappointment I say.

Commercial

Here comes CM Punk, and apparently he has a very important message for everyone at the arena and for anyone going to Survivor Series and apparently it involves a table, a trashcan, and three buckets with red “X”s on them. He says he knows the crowd is sick and helpless. He is going to help the audience with a “Straightedge Intervention.” The first step according to Punk. You have to say you have a problem.

He asks everyone to stand up and even tells television viewers that if they feel the need to put their hands on the TV screen to do so. He wants everyone to admit that they have a problem and says that they are in denial. He lifts the first bucket to expose a carton of cigarettes, which sadly gets a pop. This is indeed a conundrum of a gimmick. He opens the package and throws them in the trash and I hear some applause. Next is prescription medication which he says is not candy and its failure in a bottle. The third bucket contains a bottle of whiskey which gets a bigger pop than Tyler Reks. The crowd is cheering after Punk says, “How many of you would like to see me take a big gulp of this right now?” Punk says that what’s in the bottle is poison, that it eats at your insides and ruins your relationships. It’s the worst of them all. The crowd even sounds confused. Boo’s erupt as he pours  the bottle of whiskey into the trash can.

Now here comes R-Truth. This should be interesting.

R-Truth says everyone makes their own decisions in life. He also says he doesn’t like Punk and DDT’s him into the mat.

Then he gestures to the trash can full of whiskey.

The crowd is going crazy and R-Truth…pours whiskey, prescription drugs, and cigarettes onto Punk. I’m so confused, I almost want to turn off SmackDown. I guess have something to write about for next weeks Rundown.

We return with…

Intercontinental Champion John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship – 2-out of-3 Falls Match

With John Morrisson’s introduction it’s time for yet another installment of JoMo vs. Mr. Ziggles. Say what you will about this “feud” but I’m all for it. Ziggler gets things started with some good ground based offense until Morrison lands a dropkick and his trademark leg lariat. Things get crazy when Morrison does a front flip out of the ring springboarding off the top rope. It looked incredible. When the men get into the ring, JoMo makes his second attempt for Starship Pain but Ziggler counters by getting his knees up. Ziggler goes for the pin, but JoMo pulls Ziggler in for the cradle pin scoring the first fall!

Commercial

Ziggler gets back into control focusing on Morrison’s mid-section with a leg scissor hold, but Morrison gets out of the hold but then gets set up for a good looking Zig-Zag from Ziggler that gives Dolph his first pin fall. The score is tied one to one. The next fall wins. Dolph maintains control after landing his trademark high elbow and then taking it back to the mat for a submission hold. Ziggler continues to dominate, taking his offense to Morrison’s ailing ribs. But Morrison counters with a DDT out of attempted tilt a whirl and hits Starship Pain for the win. A great match. I’m actually disappointed for Dolph, but Morrison earned this victory.

Commercial

Hey look, a Divas match.

Mickie James vs. Layla

After the commercial break, Mickie James makes her way to the ring for some Diva action against Layla. I’m excited. I swear. Oh hey, Mickie won with a pretty good pin. I actually don’t even know how to explain it; she sort of rolled over Layla and used her legs to pin her. Really this match was just so Layla could lose and then direct Mickie to the titan-tron where Michelle McCool is waiting with animated farm backround to sing old MacDonald with Mickie’s face put on a pigs body. This is so upsetting to Mickie, she cries and leaves the ring.

Rey Mysterio is up next against Tyson Kidd!

Commercial

Back…

Rey Myserio Jr. vs. Tyson Kidd

Batista joins the announcers at ringside and just sits there quiet, staring at Rey. Kidd and Mysterio get it started with Kidd taking control early. Batista continues to remain silent, ignoring any questions from the announce team of Striker and Grisham. Kidd goes for a springboard elbow but misses, giving control back to Mysterio. We almost get a 619 , but Kidd smartly escapes to the outside. Mysterio gets to set fly off the top turnbuckle, but Batista throws Kidd out of the way and the match ends because of his interference. As Batista makes his way back to his seat ringside, Mysterio comes from out of nowhere and lands on him. They then chase each other around like Tom and Jerry with Mysterio getting the last laugh. Batista, of course, is upset.

The cameras go back to locker rooms and we get a pretty amusing exchange of words between Big Show and Chris Jericho. Big Show seems to be focused on the future and winning the World Heavyweight Championship, and isn’t too concerned about facing the Brothers of Destruction. Jericho says the same thing and as Big Show leaves the lights go out. Jericho is screaming for them to be turned back on yelling, “Who’s there! Come on!” When the lights turn back on, Jericho turns around to find Big Show standing at the switch in disbelief. Sure Chris isn’t afraid of the Undertaker.

Commercial

Finally! SmackDown has returned to my television!

The Unified Tag Team Champions: Chris Jericho & Big Show vs. The Brothers of Destruction: Kane & The Undertaker

Jerishow come out to their usual pomp and circumstance.

Commercial

It’s clear that the Brothers of Destruction intro isn’t a fine science as Kane’s intro abruptly cuts to the Undertakers, but Kane’s flames lighting up the Undertaker’s logo is pretty cool.

Kane and Jericho get things started with Kane pounding on Jericho in the corners of the ring. Undetaker makes the tag in and also begins to throw Jericho around into the corners, but on an irish whip attempt, Jericho is able to tag Big Show. Big Show and Undertaker begin to exchange blows, but Undertaker takes Big Show down with his patented clothesline off the ropes.

Commercial

We come back and Jericho is now in the ring with Undertaker. Undertaker goes old school and walks the ropes, bringing his arm down on Jericho’s before tagging in Kane. Once again off the irish whip, Jericho makes the tag and Big Show comes in hitting Kane with a spear. Show makes the tag to Jericho and he stays in control until Kane is able to get his knees up and counter the Lionsault. Jericho is able to recover and makes the tag to Big Show and then goes down to the announce table to yell, “Look at how Big Show man handles Kane. Nobody can do that!”

After both men fall from the top turnbuckle, Kane is able to make the tag, as is Big Show. But a qucikly as Jericho enters the ring, Undetaker locks in Hell’s Gate. Big Show comes in to break the hold and the match dissolves into chaos, with the Brothers of Destrcution clearing off the announce table to put Big Show through it with a dual chokeslam, but Jericho rescues Big Show at his expense. In the ring, Kane chokeslams Jericho. Big Show then pulls Kane out from under the ropes and drops him with that huge punch of his. Undertaker attempts to chokeslam Big Show off the ring apron, but takes an elbow to the head.

When Undertaker stumbles into the ring, he sees a running Jericho and lays him out with a big boot to the face. When he turns back around Bigh Show chokeslams the deadman. Big Show then goes to Jericho, the legal man, to help drag him onto the Undertaker but Jericho gives him a Codebreaker!

Looking confused, Jericho leaves the ring and runs over to where the belts are kept and instead of taking his unified tag-team titles he runs off with the World Heavyweight championship.

I was actually expecting something like the alcohol dumpage R-Truth effected ever since Punk started his program with Jeff Hardy. It reminded me of the Lawler thing with Jake Roberts, spitting whiskey at him when he was fighting alcoholism. Did it happen in another feud too? I can’t quite remember, but it seems like it did. I thought it would be Punk taking the heel step by doing that to someone – namely Jeff – but I’m glad he didn’t. His heel tricks are a little more subtle than that. Still a little reprehensible that we’re getting a face pop for stuff like this, but my idea is it’s all Vince’s long term plan of transitioning back out of the PG rating.

I was also disappointed Dolph didn’t get the win. If this is the end of this feud (it’s gone on long enough, right?), then it’s esentially a squash. Dolph never got the win when it counted. I don’t care if it makes sense in a storyline kind of way; it’s just a trifle unpleasant. I’ve been hoping Dolph could turn face coming out of this feud – I felt there were signs of it in the Maria angle – and JoMo could shift heel-wards, but it doesn’t look like it.

Obligatory women’s match? Meh. Less groan worthy than last week, and we got a small rationale for Mickie’s clothes being her passion. I’m not too sure how I feel about the whole weight angle this week, but at least we’re getting some emotion into these matches. Michelle really needs to work on those mic skills. Or something.

Nice to see Kid get some decent action against Mysterio. Seems like it could be an okay program. Too bad Big Bad Batista was waiting to blow the house down. Trust Jericho to make a “steals the belt” angle into something containing multiple layers of meaning.

I expected the alcohol bit at some point, but I never thought they would take it THAT far. Like someone would interfere or Punk would roll out of the way. Something. From my understanding of the Roberts/King feud (I was a little kid), I find it absolutely inappropriate and abhorring. Roberts had a legitmate issue and honestly, I didn’t really know how to feel about the Hardy/Punk thing.

As for Dolph he’ll get his chance. I think we all know he has the talent, its just that Rey’s suspension threw the story out of whack. Unfortunately most viewers see him as a jobber.

They did the same kind of thing with Scott Hall/Stone Cold when the NWO came to WWE. i think that “might” be what u are referring 2, Sean. i agree with both of u guys that this is DISGUSTING when it’s done with guys who ADMITTEDLY HAVE THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION! AKA HALL/ROBERTS. As a recovering addict myself, i can’t imagine coping with the feelings and uncomfortability associated with that type of “work” environment WHILE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF RECOVERY! The way Hall and Roberts were treated ON AND OFF CAMERA was INSENSITIVE, UNCARING, AND DETRIMENTAL TO THEIR HEALTH (MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY, AND SPIRITUALLY)!

As for this “Angle” with Punk and Killingz… it’s just in BAD TASTE and DEFINATELY NOT HOW I WOULD LIKE “HEROES” (GOOD GUYS?) 2 BE PORTRAYED! At least Punk is NOT HIMSELF, a RECOVERING ADDICT. He is however, someone with which whom, i ALMOST FULLY AGREE and who i FEEL WOULD SERVE AS GREAT “ROLE MODEL” 4 kids if the MESSAGE WASN’T BEING SPEWED “AT” US! lol. Alas, i think that is the POINT! ANYONE WHO “PREACHES” THEIR OWN MORAL HIGHGROUND comes across as “SELF-RIGHTEOUS” AND “ARROGANT” and nobody does this better (in the world of wrestling right now) than C.M. PUNK! The guy is a NATURAL HEEL! i do ,however, think the “foil” 2 his arrogance could be accomplished without the PROMOTION of DRUG USE! Just sayin…

Since they are going this route with CM Punk (a stupid one I agree or at the very least very confusing) then someone other than R-Truth should have been used as his foil. As R-Truth has been somewhat promoted as the “goody-two shoes” since overcoming his past. It doesn’t make any impact the way they are doing it now and Punk is being wasted unless this is a big build-up to something much better. Besides the fact that all the things CM Punk (the supposed bad guy) is espousing are true. Cigarettes are bad for you (oh, boo?); abusing perscription medication is not healthy (boo?); alcohol abuse destroys lives (boo?, come on it’s stupid).

On another note. I would have loved to see Sheamus come to Smackdown and a heel vs. heel conflict arise between he and Drew.

  3. Anybody else notice the horrible editing job on this week’s show?
